Mr Hook, myself and a sorrowful tale...

there are cat people,
there are dog people
and then
there are 'inbetweenies' like myself,
who even if their lives depended upon it, could not bring themselves to choose between the two.

i liken the same way of thinking to crochet...
there are 'roundies' like michelle,
there are 'squaries' like ingrid
and then
there are 'inbetweenies' like emma

and where do i place myself in my opinionated assumption of 'crocheting folk', well let's just say i strayed from the path of 'squaries' once before and that straying ended up in the trash can.
a year and a half on, i dared to stray again and dearest readers, i do believe that for one moment in time, there was a flicker of hope,
a short lived evening, filled with a lifetime of 'circular crocheted' possibilities to come
and then the flicker died...
no amount of recounting the increases,
no amount of blocking offending shape,
no amount of ironing it's 'extra' ripples,
for crying out loud,
no amount of praying to the 'roundie' gods up above,
could save my little mat...

my moment of 'never destined to be an inbetweenie' came late on friday night.
by monday morning, having studied the art of 'avoidance' for several days i faced the truth, my heart sinking in the realization that 'me and Mr Hook' were 'squaries' through and through.
but do not shed a tear for me and Mr Hook, for there is a happy ending to my doomed 'flying high for a moment' sorrowful tale .
yes, it's true, i perhaps will never own a crocheted circle of good proportions made by myself,
but at least my 'ripply circle' has been saved from the 'inevitable' trash can dumping.
for a good home has been found...

a home that appreciates the finer side of all things crocheted, whatever their shape or color

and so it would appear, little olive is most happy with her new crocheted frisbee and so far the frisbee hasn't made any complaints either...

she is thinking that some days it must be exhausting being 'little olive' ~ Tif

Oh what a shame! It would have been a lovely looking mat too. You sure you can't make some sort of cushion out of it instead?

Love those flicker photos you found, such amazing creations.

I have to say, there are quite a few pampered pets out there with lovely handmade creations that didn't quite go right or were just claimed and won't let go.

What I am asking myself, dearest Tif, is how come your dog bed is so clean? And what do you do to Little Olive to stop her from chewing and shredding anything textile? It is a question I have pondered before, and I feel sadly inadequate at the thought that I could never post photos of the unspeakably muddy and torn rags that masquerade as dog beds in my little cottage.

And I can only aspire to crochet of any sort, ripply frisbee or not, in my dreams. I feel quite distressed at the thought.

oh, dearie me...i feel quite badly for you! i have just this week done my very first roundie, and am quite proud of it! there is hope for you, dear tif, if you will just persevere! i am 56 and just NOW making my first! why, i am quite certain you are more than capable of one for yourself! at the very least, little olive has your floppity ripply one all to herself!

Don't worry, I think just about everyone has trouble with the circles. My first circle was a doily with #10 thread. It did not turn out well. In retrospect it was a bad idea for my first circle to be done with thread the size of dental floss. Atleast it has a good home!

gigibird, little olive is the owner of two beds (i know, i know), one cream in the kitchen and one blue in the lounge, each with their own blankets. used dog does not do baskets, instead she has a large crocheted blanket to herself by day and by night she gets the upstairs couch :)

pomona, the secret to little olive's unchewing ways with crochet is to give her two wicker baskets. she is addicted to chewing the baskets, most of the 'entrances' has been destroyed... when i am not looking she takes little pieces off and hides under the couch 'chewing' her prize like an old man chews tobacco. i fear she is addicted...

well jus,
i tried it out on the hygenist as she had her mitts in my mouth and me, a 'trapped' victim within the dentist's chair. she thought i was just making 'muffled noises' of discontentment but no, i promise you i was saying "crikey dick" over and over again...
i am now home, taking the old painkillers and now exclaiming "flaming nora" to the shed and it's contents.

i am thinking perhaps i need to throw 'darren dictionary' to the wayside and have you as my vocab coach :)

thanks for the 'frisbee love' my dearest readers, you are quite honestly a most supportive bunch and i do believe another gold star maybe forthcoming very soon :)

I am going to find an excuse to say "crikey Dick" on a daily basis. God knows it won't be hard to find some situation requiring an expletive.

I'm thinking once it's well loved and used, it will flatten right out.

I've never attempted a crocheted roundie. I have every reason to believe it may turn out exactly as yours. But what a lovely home it has now. And you have so many other talents with yarn my dear, as in "spinning yarns" -- the gift of storytelling is justly your's and I give a chuckle every time I ready one of your posts (I went through as many as I could last nite before I headed off to bed). I love your challenge. In fact, I decided some time back that I would never give a gift without including something homemade. So many people don't use the talents they have. Best wishes to you, :) Tammy

I am going to send you instructions and a very clear (hand drawn) diagram
I will make you a roundie if it kills me....Hmmmm famous last words I fear...
Will get onto it tonight and e-mail you...
P.s I will start out very slowly I promise...

oh miss Tif... i wish i was just round the corner from you, i'd be there i a jiffy with a hook and choccy bar in hand, and i'd have you crocheting squares, roundies and everything in between in no time!

but miss Olive looks quite pleased with her new toy, i know you know she thinks it is 'peachy perfect'... and i know a wee pup round here would love one too!

hugs my 'squarey' buddy... :)

your blog is beyond delightful, and i'm so glad i happened upon it.

i'd love to join the "challenge of the utmost kind"! my sister and i are both big thrift store and antique store shoppers and love to go garage sale-ing, too! this would be right up my alley! not hard to shop in thrift stores. the hard part will be not buying something new. but, the hubby and i just recently got jobs after being unemployed from layoffs, so this couldn't come at a better time. i enjoy the hunt and the creativity in thrift shopping.

anyway, i'll add your button to my side-bar on Jorjah-B and tell my readers about the challenge, as well as your lovely blog. it's just about the most fun, whimsical blog i have ever seen!
